Scansion were a three piece band formed in september 1989. Through many years and many musical transformations we tried to play music that was a cross-over between Nirvana and Fugazi (i.e. Indie Music). We played a lot around Camden (London) and achieved the dubious honour of being included on a compilation CD of established and unsigned bands aimed at showcasing new talent (or 'lack of talent' in our case!). We split up in 1996 because of geographical differences (drummer in Oxford, Bassist in London, me in Brighton).

You can here our contribution to this CD by downloading an MP3 file by clicking on one of the guitars below (I warn you, the full version is 9 minutes so will take a while to download). There are some other recordings from rehearsal, and these are also in MP3 format. These rehearsal recordings are very rough and ready (recorded by placing a tape recorder in the rehearsal studio) but provide some idea of how we used to spend our spare time (even if my guitar was usually out of tune!).Click on a guitar ...

Left: I can't be bothered with the full 9 minutes, give me a snippet instead.
Left: I have the largest computer in the world, and I can download a 9 minute MP3 file
Mr. Cool: This is taken from a rehearsal recording and is in MP3 format.
A throw away song for a throw away culture: This is taken from a rehearsal recording and is in MP3 format.

The Band

  • Mark Franklin (Drums) : Mark is one of my oldest and most handsome buddies from school. He quit a career in graphic design to become the highly talented session musician that we always knew he was, and then became a graphic designer again. He lives in Witney (near Oxford) and plays in numerous local bands (I lose track...). He got married to Hanna (July 2001), has two Daughters, Emily (2002) and Charlotte (2005) and is very much living happily ever after - and deservedly so.

  • Mark Gatland (Bass Guitar): Gat is also an old buddy from school and is as cuddly a bloke as you could ever meet. He manages a music shop London selling guitars, he teaches bass guitar and plays bass guitar in Commander Swift. He got married to Katie (July 2000) and has the rather lovely habit of turning up in the same pubs as me when I'm in London.

  • Andy Field (Guitar/Voice): Well if you've got this far you already know more than enough about me. I currently write and play music for myself in my bedroom - this is a blessing for most of the world. I also play drums in Windowlicker, who make one hell of a noise when we put our minds to it.

The Recordings

  • Sept 1990 - Demo: Something wicked this way comes / C.B.A.
  • 1991/2 - Big Belief Demo: On My Own / Nothing / Conclusion
  • 1992/3 - Untitled demo: Sick Sense / Learned Helplessness / Fading
  • 1993 - 'Gash': Caprice / Scum / The End
  • 1995 - Amplified Compilation CD - Left
    • This was a compilation CD of up and coming indie bands - some signed and others, like us, unsigned. Our contribution was a 9 minute song called 'left' (see above to hear this song) and you can find out more about the project by following the link. Despite the length of our track it got played on indie radio shows around London and was singled out in several fanzine reviews.

The 'where are they now' file ..... or should that be the 'where were they in the first place' file!

They have erased my past for fear it will distract me from research and teaching..
